USM Hosts “Mother/Nature Conference”
![]()
When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” - John Muir
We live in a time of crisis in our homes and in our natural environment. From hurricanes to oil spills, we are linked to each other through the loss and degradation of regional and national habitats. Our selfhoods and the place we make for ourselves in the world are ultimately rooted in both our biological and ecological families.
The University of Southern Mississippi English Department will host a conference entitled Mother/Nature to discover interconnectedness and meaning through a study of shifting influences on the changing definition of motherhood. The three-day conference will include double-session panels from multiple disciplines exploring and critiquing theories of childbirth, biological and non-biological definitions of mother hood, women's health and representations of motherhood in literature, popular culture and film. Paper submissions have been invited from the fields of English, philosophy, history, sociology and anthropology. Submissions have also been invited for readings of creative works. A writing workshop is planned with plenary speaker Janisse Ray. This conference is free and open to the public.
