The Mississippi Humanities Council recently wrapped up a series of grant-writing and outside evaluator workshops held at various sites across the state. The workshops introduced new grant-writers to the Council's grants process and offered training for humanities scholars interested in becoming evaluators for Council-funded programs.

Workshops were held at the University of Mississippi, Jackson State University, Delta State University and the University of Southern Mississippi-Hattiesburg. Another series of workshops will be offered in the fall.

The grant-writing workshops presented an overview of grant opportunities with the Mississippi Humanities Council and grant-writing suggestions. The MHC program evaluator workshops were targeted at anyone already listed as an MHC evaluator, as well as anyone interested in becoming an MHC evaluator. All MHC grants require an outside evaluation, performed by an approved MHC evaluator. Evaluators receive a $150 honorarium plus 25 cents toward any round trip mileage to attend an MHC-funded program. Evaluators are asked to write a report based on a provided outline and submit it directly to the MHC. Anyone wishing to serve as an MHC Outside Evaluator must attend one of the trainings offered around the state this year, including persons who have evaluated for the MHC in the past.

The Council will hold 3-4 additional trainings in the fall. Anyone interested in these trainings who did not receive email invitations to the spring workshops should contact Elena Fougerousse at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to add your email address to the mailing list.

Only those persons who have completed either a spring evaluator workshop or a fall workshop will be eligible to evaluate MHC-funded programs beginning Jan. 1, 2013. Any questions may be directed to Carol Andersen at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
